Anytime Arepa, a familiar truck at Zócalo Food Park in Walker’s Point, opens Friday at the market hall, 275 W. Wisconsin Ave.
New to its menu: The traditional Queen arepa, or reina pepiada, chilled chicken salad with creamy avocado.
Other arepas — Venezuelan sandwiches served on naturally gluten-free cornmeal flatbreads — have hot fillings of beef, chicken, pork or black bean and ripe plantain plus various toppings. The pork is made from the owners’ family Christmas recipe.
Bacon, egg and cheddar arepas are sold 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily (the breakfast arepa is $10.99; others are $11.99).
Other menu items include Venezuelan empanadas ($5.49 and $6.49) and snacks such as tequeños, pastry-wrapped cheese sticks (six for $10).
Leo Farfan and Maria Salas started their business in 2019 and became full-time vendors at Zócalo in 2020. Anytime Arepa’s original location there will remain open. The business is on Facebook and Instagram.
Dawg City opened this week at the market hall, serving items like Philly cheesesteak dogs, brats, Polish sausage and barbecued-pork nachos.
All-beef hot dogs range from $7.95 for a classic or a corn dog to $10.95 for elaborately topped ones like the Philly.
Others include the Hickory: bacon, cheese and barbecue sauces, and grilled onions ($8.95).
Also on the menu: loaded cheese fries, fried cheese curds, funnel cake fries and more.
Dawg City’s owners are Ken and Tonya Hughes. The business is on Instagram.
Kawa Ramen, a sibling to Kawa Sushi in Whitefish Bay and on the east side, specializes in chicken ramen, three ways ($17): clear broth; paitan, the broth creamy from long simmering; and “hellfire,” with chile oil.
It also sells rice bowls, such as salmon, chashu chicken and grilled eel ($15 to $18). Snacks ($5 to $9) include edamame, karaage chicken — Japanese fried chicken — and pork dumplings.
Kawa operator Linjin Xiao will open a Kawa sushi stall at the food hall, as well. No date has been set yet.
With Anytime Arepa’s opening Friday, the hall is up to 14 operating vendors plus the hall’s full bar. They include Strega pasta and desserts, Hot Dish Pantry pierogi, Dairyland burgers, chicken sandwiches and custard, Middle East Side sandwiches and hummus, Greenhouse salads and sandwiches, Strange Town Bottle Shop and natural-wine bar, Mid-Way Bakery and Amano Pan sourdough loaves and pizza slices.
Kompali Taqueria and Supernova Coffee and Doughnuts are to open the week of May 15; Paper Plane Pizza is due by late June. The hall has room for several more vendors, market hall partner Omar Shaikh said.
The hall, which is cashless, is open for lunch and dinner daily at 11 a.m.
