Retirement community with 2-year waiting list, plans to build new apartment building on its campus

A senior living community in Lancaster County has announced it plans to build a new apartment building on its campus.

United Zion Retirement Community announced earlier this month that it plans to construct the new facility near its main building along Furnace Hills Pike in Warwick Township. The building is expected to have around 47 apartments as well as a common space for campus residents.

The new building will have a fitness center, fresh dining options, and additional gathering areas.

Plans calls for two-bedroom, one-bedroom plus den and one-bedroom apartments. These units will range from 700 to 1,100 square feet of space.

Final building design and layouts will be available this winter. Applications are currently being accepted for these new units and reservations will start in the spring. Groundbreaking for the building will be in the fall of 2023, and residents will be able to move in the spring of 2025.

United Zion says it has a waiting list of over two years for its current independent residential living residences.

“The leadership at United Zion has spent hours in prayer, evaluation and planning to create a vision to improve and expand our beautiful campus,” Sue Verdegem, CEO of the United Zion Retirement Community said in a news release. “We see this as a much-needed project for the Lancaster County community as well as a chance to enhance the active and engaging lifestyle for the campus’s residents.”

Officials said each residence is within an easy walk of campus amenities including a community room, wellness center, chapel, dining options, salon and library.

“Moving into a cottage or apartment at United Zion means no longer worrying about house maintenance as helpful staff is only a phone call away,” the organization said in the news release. “Plus, housekeeping is included. There are plenty of wellness, social and educational activities on campus to keep you busy and entertained.”

United Zion Retirement Community was founded in 1905 and offers residential living cottages and apartments, personal care services, and skilled nursing care for long-term care and short-term rehabilitation. The community is located at 722 Furnace Hills Pike near Lititz, and is about 45 minutes from Harrisburg.

United Zion has started a capital campaign. The retirement will be hosting a walk-in event from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 9.
